After Word
The day after this interview with Bruce, while trying to get Bruce's assistant Jan Holbrook home to her apartment in Hollywood, we were foiled at every turn by some big parade that was in progress. Tired, hungry, and sick of being detoured from one street to another, we finally decided to stop for lunch at a neighborhood deli at about two in the afternoon. On the strangest impulse, I chose to bring my camera inside with me rather than leave it in the car. Anyway, our lunch had just been served when out of the corner of my eye I saw a familiar form slip into a booth directly on my right. I turned my head for a closer look, and sure enough it was Ted.

This was just too funny a coincidence to pass up. I turned my camera on, brought up a picture of Bruce on the review screen, and went over to show Ted. He cracked up when I showed him the photo of Bruce and explained that I had just interviewed Bruce the day before - about HIM. "That's so cool," he kept saying.

We chatted for a few minutes, but I didn't want to interrupt his lunch, and he'd already said we'd do an interview sometime, so I just asked if I could get a couple of photos of him later. "Let's do it now," he said cheerfully. By the time I had my camera aimed in his general direction, he had already struck a pose. I took two shots, was delighted with both of them, and then happily left him to read and enjoy his lunch in peace. Who could ask for a better ending to a weekend devoted to gathering material for an article on Ted?

Thanks to Ted, whose timing was - as always - IMPECCABLE
